Princetown 4-0 Barbican Pirates (PS)

The Pirates Start Pre-Season In Defeat

(Sunday 27th July 2014)

A tough start to Pre-Season for The Pirates against a completely overhauled Princetown squad. Starting in a 4-4-2 formation Manager Kris Carpenter was pressed into a starting role on the right side of defence after a late with drawl, Richard Johns made His 1st start as the confirmed No1 Goal Keeper for the new season, with Rob Gregory & James Berntsen also making starts in unfamiliar positions, Adam Morgan made His second début for the club after rejoining in the summer. Enda Hannigan was appointed Captain for the match, a role that was popular amongst the squad. The game started at a fairly slow pace, both teams content to get a feel of the ball, the first 20 mins passing without notice. The 1st chance fell to The Pirates, a delightful passing move resulted in a low cross which Rob Gregory blazed over from close range, unlucky & excellent Football. As the first half wore on Princetown took the pace up a notch forcing Johns in to 2 superb reflex saves as well as a string of corners. In the 35th minute their pressing paid off, a break down the left hand side & a whipped deep back post cross was nodded home from 6 yards, despite the linesman’s flag going up, the striker pulling around the back between Brettell & Carpenter to score. 1-0 at half time. The 2nd half saw Carpenter make changes to get subs a run out, débuts for Sean Cross, Aaron Reed & keeper Rhys Jones as well as Ryan Dainty coming on up front & Dave Isaacs to Left Back. Despite a strong start and forcing the Princetown keeper in to 2 good saves The Pirates fell 2 goals behind, a good passing move down the left wing resulted in the ball seemingly going dead for a throw, but the referee deemed it in play, as the winger was cut down near the touchline a foul was committed, leading to a free kick, the cross came in to the box & the ball drilled home for 12 yards. 2-0. More changes followed with rolling subs & predictably the opposition took advantage, the 3rd goal arrived from close range after a scramble in the box, Rhys Jones unlucky to see the ball slide under Him at the far post. 3-0. Wayne Southall forced an excellent save form the Princetown keeper from a free kick & Aaron Reed’s header was also well kept out by the stopper, but late on the 4th goal arrived, a nice passing move cut The Pirates defence apart & the striker finished it off from close range. 4-0. The full time whistle was blown, handshakes were exchanged.

Overall a good run out, given that it was the 1st game of Pre-Season & playing an opposition in a League above was no easy task, but the fitness levels were great, team spirit was high & The Pirates now look to regroup ready for the next game against Keyham Kolts next Sunday.
